What is teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a popular procedure used to lighten the colour of teeth in a safe, effective way. It improves the appearance, brightens your teeth and can take years off an ageing smile. By using professional teeth whitening products you can do this safely with long lasting results without damaging your teeth.

There are three types of whitening gels that we have available.

– 6% hydrogen peroxide (used for 30-60 minutes often in the day) This is convenient for people with busy lifestyles who want speedy results.

– 10% carbamide peroxide (used for 2-4 hours daily or overnight) A popular choice for those who prefer to whiten during their sleep. Many find this convenient when they have little other time to whiten.

– 16% carbamide peroxide (1-2 hours daily) Reduced wear time with stronger peroxide is becoming more popular with patients that do not have any issues with sensitivity.

How does it work?

Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide causes an oxidation reaction- breaking down and dissolving the molecules (stains) in the dentine and enamel, resulting in whiter teeth.

What happens when I start my whitening with dentist?

1. Initially an impression or scan will be taken of the teeth so that flexible whitening trays can be made. (It is advisable to have a visit to the hygienist prior to carrying out whitening to achieve optimum results).
2. About 2 weeks later, the whitening trays will be fitted by your clinician to ensure they are a good fit and you are happy with the application of the whitening gel. A record of your starting shade will be made so you can see how much whiter your teeth have become. We provide you with everything you need to carry out the whitening at home and the trays are yours to keep to repeat the whitening in the future when required.
3. We always like to book a review appointment 2-3 weeks later so we can discuss any concerns and check progress made which is all included in our whitening package price.

Do whitening toothpastes work?

Whitening toothpastes can appear to whiten teeth but they will only remove surface staining and will not change the natural colour of the tooth or lighten a stain that goes beneath the surface. Whitening toothpastes can also be quite abrasive and damage enamel.

How long do results last?

Bleaching is not permanent but results can last for years depending on your lifestyle. Most patients tend to keep their whitening trays and purchase ‘top up’ syringes when needed.

Is it safe/will it harm my teeth?

Teeth whitening using professional products is considered safe, however some people can experience some sensitivity, which can often be relieved by using a sensitive toothpaste. Your dentist can talk through ways to combat this when you come in for your appointment.

Will it work for me?

Teeth whitening produces very good results. However, results will depend on a number of factors and lifestyle such as food and drink consumed, tobacco use and medications. Please be aware that crowns, veneers and fillings will not lighten.

How much will it cost?

Our package price is £350 or £270 if you have had orthodontic treatment within the last year at the practice.

These fees include all of the appointments you need to ensure you get the best results which includes an initial scan or impressions to make the trays, an appointment to fit the trays and demonstrate how to use the products and a review appointment to monitor your progress.
