What is dental hygiene?

Good dental hygiene is the foundation of healthy gums and teeth. Our team is here to help you develop an oral hygiene plan that will keep you smiling, save loose teeth and help to prevent against linked diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Why is seeing a hygienist necessary?

Dental hygiene is taking care of your mouth, teeth and gums and educating you in routines to keep your mouth clean such as daily brushing and flossing. A good dental hygiene routine keeps your mouth problem-free and helps you maintain a healthy smile.

What is a dental hygienist?

The dental hygienist has an important role to play in preventative dentistry and oral health. Our highly-skilled hygienists (Lesley and Charlotte) will clean your teeth and remove excess plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

They will also advise you on the correct dental care and they are adept at managing and treating periodontal gum disease. Our hygienists work closely with our gum specialist Joel Thomas to ensure you will always receive the optimum care and treatment.

Our team will work with you to tailor a home care routine that is sustainable for long term oral health.

You should aim to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time.
Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damaging your gums and enamel. Electric toothbrushes are often recommended for more thorough cleaning, but a manual toothbrush can be just as effective when used correctly.
Yes, it’s highly recommended to floss daily. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth, where a toothbrush can’t reach, preventing gum disease and cavities.
With proper care, dental veneers can last for many years, often a decade or more. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are essential for their longevity.
Signs of gum disease include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing. Bad breath and receding gums are also common symptoms. If you notice these signs, it's important to see a dentist promptly.
Mouthwash can be a useful addition to your oral hygiene routine. It helps freshen breath and can aid in killing bacteria, reducing plaque, and preventing gum disease. However, it should not replace brushing and flossing, which are the most important aspects of dental care.
