What are facial aesthetic treatments

31 August 2021

What are facial aesthetic treatments?

As we age, our skin starts to show the signs of ageing. Hyaluronic acid content and elasticity of the skin reduce which can result in wrinkles and loss of facial volume and definition. To combat these signs of ageing, the use of anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers, or a combination of both, can be administered. Facial aesthetic treatments rejuvenate the skin and may give a more youthful appearance. Treatments can also be used to enhance facial features through increasing the volume of the lips, for example, or defining the jaw line or cheek bones.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Delivered with an ultra-fine needle, our anti-wrinkle injections use a purified protein called Botulinum toxin that works by temporarily relaxing specific muscles to prevent the skin from creasing. Relaxation of the facial muscles reduces the formation of wrinkles and rejuvenates the appearance of the skin. Injections are delivered carefully to smooth the face whilst avoiding a ‘frozen’ unnatural appearance. By targeting only certain muscles, treatment is confined to that one area, so overall facial expression and muscle movement are unaffected.

Anti-wrinkle injections are often used on the top half of the face to reduce wrinkles on the forehead or around the eyes. ‘Gummy smiles’ can also be managed. The procedure is relatively quick and takes around 10-20 minutes and requires no recovery time.

Treatment results begin to show after several days, but it may take up to two weeks to see the complete result. The overall results of the treatment can last for up to 6 months and when they do wear off you can visit again for a top up.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers replenish the hyaluronic acid within the skin. The filler is accepted by the body, because it’s an existing natural substance occurring in the body to lubricate the joints and hydrate the skin. The purpose of dermal fillers is to reduce the appearance of those deeper, more stubborn wrinkle lines, as well as adding volume to the skin.

They are often recommended to restore volume in the cheek bones and chin, an area where volume is often lost in the ageing process.  Dermal fillers are also used to produce a more perfect pout by creating more defined, plumper lips.

The treatment is simple, a numbing cream is applied to the area to make things more comfortable and then a gel-like filler is delivered through very fine needles or cannulas. The whole process shouldn’t take long, and the effects are instant and can last for several months.

Am I suitable for anti-wrinkle injections and fillers?

It is recommended that facial aesthetic treatments are avoided during pregnancy and when breastfeeding. Your medical history and medications will be reviewed during your consultation to confirm your suitability.

Does treatment hurt?

To increase treatment comfort, you may choose to have numbing cream applied to your skin or it may be appropriate to have local anaesthetic delivered.

How long do results last?

Duration of treatment outcomes vary between individuals. Effects commonly last 3 months, but duration may increase with repeated use. Dermal fillers may last from approximately 6-12 months depending upon the area treated.
