What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is used to save or repair a badly decayed or infected tooth. It is an alternative way to preserve a tooth other than extraction.

The dead or inflamed part of the tooth is removed and the remaining space is treated to allow healing. The space or canal is filled using a biocompatible material that is then sealed in place.

Is the procedure painful?

A local anaesthetic is given to numb the area and it should not be any different to a filling. It is normal to feel some soreness after the treatment but over the counter painkillers can be successful in managing this.

How long does the treatment take?

On average treatment would be completed over two visits. The time taken can vary considerably between a front tooth which has one root compared to a molar tooth which may have four roots.
