What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are used to restore back teeth when your dentist is unable to solely fill your tooth.

Both inlays and onlays are made in a laboratory to fit the shape of your tooth. An inlay fits into the grooves of a tooth whilst an onlay is pre-moulded to cover the top of a tooth. Both options are far less destructive than crowns.

What are the benefits?

Both inlays and onlays are less invasive than crowns so we are less likely to get complications. They provide a strong and lasting solution to damaged teeth and can be made to match your teeth perfectly.

How long does the procedure take?

It will usually take at least two visits. One to prepare the tooth, take digital or conventional impressions and fit a temporary restoration. There is usually about 1-2 weeks between the appointments to fit the permanent restoration.

At Cheltenham and Cotswold Dental in some instances we are able to use the latest technology to take impressions with our iTero 3D scanner.
