Crowns are used to restore a broken or damaged tooth or to improve the appearance of a tooth

What does the procedure involve?

At the initial visit, it will be necessary to prepare the tooth to receive a crown and at this stage, we would take a digital scan or impression to transfer the information to our dental laboratory. We would also take a series of photographs to help us determine the correct shade, size and shape of your teeth to provide you with a matching replacement.

This prescription is then sent to our dental technician in Taunton who will fabricate a bespoke crown for yourself which will blend into your smile seamlessly. A temporary crown is inserted until the new crown is delivered.

When are crowns recommended?

  • If you have a large fractured filling, it may need a crown to prevent further fracture of the tooth.
  • It is often recommended to crown root-filled teeth as long term they have shown to offer excellent protection and strength for a vulnerable and weakened tooth.

How long does it take?

It will usually take at least two visits. One to prepare the tooth, take digital or conventional impressions and fit a temporary crown. There is usually about 1-2 weeks between the appointments to fit the permanent crown.

At Cheltenham and Cotswold Dental in some instances, we are able to use the latest technology to take impressions with our iTero 3D scanner.

What are the benefits of digital impressions?

  • Greater comfort
  • Quicker process
  • More relaxing for anxious patients
  • Scan results can be stored on computer
  • Environmentally friendly

Is the procedure painful?

The preparation work will feel no different from a simple filling and you will be given a local anaesthetic.
