James is currently Consultant Orthodontist at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Specialist Orthodontic practitioner at Cheltenham and Cotswold Dental.

He qualified as a dentist from Guy’s Hospital, London, in 1984 before undertaking a number of hospital posts at Guy’s Hospital, Gloucester & Cheltenham Hospitals and Bath. Following 2 years as Registrar at Newcastle Dental Hospital and obtaining a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from Glasgow, he undertook specialist Orthodontic training at the Eastman Dental Institute in London obtaining an MSc, D.Orth and M.Orth. He was awarded the BSSO Gold medal for the best individual performance in the M.Orth examination in 1992 and subsequently undertook further specialty training under Harry Orton at Kingston Hospital and the Eastman from 1992-1995.

Locum periods in India and Hong Kong followed before taking on the Locum Consultant position at Kingston. In 2004, James was then re-appointed to his current Consultant post, and started Cotswold Orthodontics specialist practice with colleagues in 2004 (now Cheltenham & Cotswold Dental).

James has extensive experience in all aspects of orthodontics, and aside from routine orthodontic treatments, has a particular interest in provision of treatment to adults, those requiring jaw surgery and children with cleft lip and palates. He particularly likes the use of functional appliances to influence jaw development in children and employs all types of fixed and removable braces including Invisalign and Invisalign Teen to provide patients of all ages with the best contemporary care. He is experienced in the use of ceramic, metal and lingual fixed appliances.

James is a core member of the BGSW Orthodontic Managed Clinical Network in Orthodontics, a visiting orthodontic lecturer to Bristol Dental School and past Chairman of Gloucestershire BDA.

Outside of dentistry he is married to Janet with four children, and enjoys hockey, skiing and generally outdoor activities.
