Straightening Teeth

5 June 2024

Teeth straightening in adults is one of the fastest growing trends in the UK. We are very accustomed to the “American smile” but we are now starting to follow this trend in the UK. Not just adult orthodontics but childhood orthodontics has become commonplace.

Should you straighten your teeth?

Well yes actually, there are many benefits to straightening your teeth.

Benefits of straight teeth

  • Simply having a nice straight smile to be proud of
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Straight teeth can help with your bite and reduce the risk of jaw trouble in the future. It can also make eating and biting much easier
  • Straighter teeth will be much easier to clean than crooked teeth, ultimately giving you a healthier mouth and reduce your risk of both gum disease and decay

How do you straighten teeth?

There are multiple options available to you including fixed braces and clear aligner braces like Invisalign. Your orthodontist will run through the options with you during your consultation and treatment planning appointment. There may be one option that may suit your teeth better and that will be explained to you.

Fixed braces are attached to the teeth and remain in place throughout your treatment, they tend to be more visible but there are wonderful aesthetic options available that include metal, ceramic and gold brackets.

Aligner braces like Invisalign are clear and removable giving you more flexibility, as well as being more discreet as they are often described as an invisible brace. They are also very comfortable, and many patients actually say they miss wearing them when they finish their treatment. Writing this blog, I have experienced both of these appliance systems personally and had a positive experience with both fixed braces and Invisalign aligners.

How much does it cost to straighten my teeth?

Cost can often be a barrier to starting orthodontic treatment, however here at Cheltenham and Cotswold Dental we do have the option of payment plans. You are able to spread the cost throughout the course of your treatment in monthly or three-monthly payments. In fact, straightening your teeth could actually save you money in the long term as you will have a lovely healthy mouth that you will be able to maintain with minimal professional intervention.

Will straightening my teeth hurt?

Clear aligners like Invisalign are proven to be more comfortable than traditional fixed braces and in most cases, you only experience some mild discomfort often only at the beginning of treatment; most patients do not require any pain relief during the whole course of treatment.

Why should you see a specialist orthodontist?

At Cheltenham and Cotswold Dental your treatment will be provided by Specialist Orthodontists and Orthodontic Therapists. These highly skilled clinicians have partaken in additional training over many years and only provide orthodontic treatment. We also have clinicians who are Platinum Invisalign providers and they have achieved this by demonstrating the highest level of experience, meaning our patients will receive the most advanced and effective treatment options available.

You can therefore be reassured that you are in the best hands and will be provided with the most appropriate and up to date orthodontic techniques in the timeliest manner.
