Replacing missing teeth

29 October 2024

What options are there to replace missing teeth?

There are usually a number of permanent or removable solutions available. In some instances if the gap is small, we can utilise a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth. This is when a neighbouring tooth is used for support. Alternative options would include a removable denture or a dental implant.

Which option is the best?

This is usually dependent on the scenario but one must always be mindful that a removable denture will never function like your original teeth and it may take time to acclimatise to your speech and chewing capacity. A dental bridge can be successful but one must always be careful to avoid chewing hard foods on it. With dental implants, there are no real restrictions on eating and they are the more like-for-like tooth replacement option.

Can anyone have implants?

There is no age barrier to having implants but we are always mindful that patients who are heavy smokers, have uncontrolled diabetics, have had previous jaw radiotherapy and have poor systemic health are at an increased risk of complications. We would need to advise you on your suitability.

How long does treatment take?

On some occasions the tooth can be extracted and implant placed on the same day (immediate) and this has the benefit of speeding up treatment and minimising invasiveness. Treatment time can be anything between 3-18 months depending on treatment complexity.

Is implant treatment painful?

Most patients take regular paracetamol & ibuprofen following surgery and this is sufficient to manage minor discomfort.

How do you plan the treatment?

Planning is critical to any implant treatment plan. We would usually begin by taking a 3d ct scan of the area to show us the available bone and anatomy. Thereafter we would take an intra-oral scan to merge the data and finalise the plan.

How long do implants last?

The long term clinical evidence suggests a survival rate of 95-98% over long term however our success rate is higher at c&cd. With regular maintenance and hygienist care the implants will remain stable.

Who carries out the implant work at C&CD?

We have two implant surgeons at the practice. The first is the practice principal, dr imi nasser who has 16 years experience in implant dentistry. He is an international lecturer and has won the uk aesthetic / dental awards in implants from 2020-2024. We also have our specialist periodontist, dr joel thomas, who comes with a wealth of experience. Both imi & joel will be happy to discuss your options with you.

Contact us if you would like to discuss things further with one of our helpful treatment coordinators you can contact them via our website or by calling the practice on 01242 269498.
