What is Airflow® Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a systematic, predictable solution for reducing the dental biofilm that appears on teeth. Biofilm is the sticky, colourless layer of bacteria (plaque) that forms on your teeth daily and is the root cause of gum disease and tooth decay. Using the state-of-the-art EMS Airflow® system, we can remove 100% of the biofilm, leaving your mouth cleaner than ever before without the need for traditional scraping.

The benefits of Airflow®

Switching to Airflow® GBT offers several advantages over traditional dental hygiene methods:

  • Ultimate comfort: The water is warm to prevent the sensitivity often felt during hygiene appointments, making it perfect for those with sensitive teeth.
  • Non-invasive: There are no instruments used on your enamel, and this is particularly beneficial to nervous dental patients.
  • Superior results: It effectively removes deeper stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco to a standard that traditional polishing can’t quite reach.
  • Comprehensive care: It is the most effective way to clean hard-to-reach areas, such as between tight teeth and around dental work. It’s particularly useful for those having orthodontic treatment.

How does Airflow® work?

The Airflow® system uses a controlled stream of warmed water, air, and very fine, gentle powder. This mixture acts almost like a high-tech jet wash for your mouth. Because the particles are so fine, they can penetrate deep into the periodontal pockets and the tiny grooves of your teeth, flushing away bacteria and surface stains quickly and painlessly.

What does treatment involve?

Your GBT appointment at our Cheltenham practice is a simple, multi-step process:

  1. Assessment: We check the health of your gums and teeth.
  2. Disclosure: We apply a disclosing dye to your teeth that turns biofilm a bright colour. This makes the plaque visible so we can show you exactly where to focus your brushing at home.
  3. Airflow®: Using the visible dye as a map, we use the Airflow® handpiece to wash away all the coloured biofilm and stains.
  4. Final check: Once the biofilm is gone, we perform a final check for any hard tartar (calculus) and remove it gently.

FAQs

Airflow® is often preferred for its effectiveness in removing surface stains and soft deposits that may be challenging to eliminate with traditional methods. It's generally quicker and less discomforting than manual scaling and offers a smooth, polished finish.
Yes, Airflow® is considered safe for most patients. It is a gentle and minimally abrasive technique that is typically safe for both teeth and gums. However, it's essential to consult with your dentist or dental hygienist to ensure it's appropriate for your specific dental needs.
While Airflow® polishing is suitable for most patients, individuals with certain dental conditions, such as severe gum disease or exposed tooth roots, may not be ideal candidates. Your dentist or dental hygienist will evaluate your oral health to determine if Airflow® polishing is suitable for you.
Airflow® polishing can remove surface stains, which may result in a brighter appearance for your teeth. However, it's not a teeth-whitening procedure for deep, intrinsic stains. Professional teeth whitening treatments are more effective for significant whitening.
Airflow® polishing is generally well-tolerated by most patients and is considered less uncomfortable than traditional scaling methods. It may produce mild sensitivity in some individuals, but this is usually temporary and subsides quickly. The procedure is designed to be as painless and gentle as possible.
