What are facial aesthetic treatments?

Facial aesthetic treatments are non-surgical cosmetic facial treatments designed to rejuvenate your appearance by addressing common signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of facial volume. These treatments are incredibly popular because they offer significant improvements without the need for invasive surgery or extensive downtime.

At our Cheltenham clinic, we specialise in two of the most widely recognised and effective non-surgical facial treatments:

  • Anti-wrinkle injections: These treatments work by relaxing specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles – the lines that appear when you animate your face. By gently softening the muscle movements, these lines become less noticeable, resulting in a smoother, more refreshed complexion.
  • Dermal fillers: As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, leading to a loss of volume, particularly in the cheeks, lips, and around the mouth. Dermal fillers are gel-like substances, primarily composed of hyaluronic acid, which are carefully injected to restore lost volume, plump up lines, enhance contours, and improve skin hydration.

Both treatments are performed with precision and care, aiming for results that subtly enhance your features, allowing you to look like a more rested and radiant version of yourself.

FAQs

Botulinum toxin is injected into the facial muscles using very fine needles; nerve impulses within the muscles are blocked, which prevents contraction of the muscles. Relaxation of the facial muscles reduces the formation of wrinkles and rejuvenates the appearance of the skin. Injections are delivered carefully to smooth the face whilst avoiding a ‘frozen’ unnatural appearance. Treatment results begin to show after several days, but it may take up to two weeks to see the complete result. Areas commonly treated with botulinum toxin are forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. ‘Gummy smiles’ can also be managed. Results are visible immediately after treatment.
Yes, when administered by a qualified and experienced medical professional, facial aesthetic treatments like anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are considered very safe. Practitioners with a deep understanding of facial anatomy, such as dentists or doctors, are trained to perform these procedures with precision, minimising risks and ensuring your safety. As with any medical treatment, minor and temporary side effects like bruising or swelling can occur, but serious complications are extremely rare when conducted in a sterile environment by a skilled professional.
It is recommended that facial aesthetic treatments be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Your medical history and medications will be reviewed during your consultation to confirm your suitability.
To increase treatment comfort, you may choose to have numbing cream applied to your skin, or it may be appropriate to have local anaesthetic delivered.
The duration of treatment outcomes varies between individuals. Effects of botulinum toxin commonly last 3 months, but duration may increase with repeated use.
While both Botox (anti-wrinkle injections) and dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to rejuvenate the face, they work in fundamentally different ways. Essentially, Botox addresses muscle activity, while fillers address volume loss and skin laxity.
Anti-wrinkle treatment is virtually pain-free. You may experience some discomfort when the injections are being administered, but this is over very quickly. Many patients don’t feel any pain. We ensure you are feeling at ease before we begin and take a careful and gentle approach to treatment, particularly if you are nervous.
Anti-wrinkle injections are also commonly used to treat wrinkles by relaxing certain muscles of the face. They can also stop the nerve endings from sending messages to the sweat glands and temporarily reduce sweating. This is particularly useful when treating hyperhidrosis.
Yes, when carried out by a qualified and experienced professional, anti-wrinkle treatment is safe. We use regulated products and prioritise your safety above all. During the consultation stage, we take time to go through the process with you, ensuring you understand the treatment and are happy to give your informed consent to continue.
Your anti-wrinkle treatment results are not permanent and will need to be topped up if you want your new rejuvenated look to be maintained. On average, most people will need a top up treatment every 4 months, although it is often noted that the effects can last longer following multiple treatments.
Treatment with dermal fillers shouldn’t hurt. Most fillers include an added anaesthetic, meaning the treatment is virtually pain-free. We can also use a topical local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort as we administer the dermal filler with ultrafine needles. After treatment, you may experience some tenderness around the affected area, but this is temporary.
Yes, when regulated dermal filler treatment is carried out by a qualified professional, it is completely safe. We provide the very best care in a clean and safe environment to deliver the results you deserve. We make sure you are aware of the procedure before we begin and give you the chance to ask any questions and gain your consent to continue.
Your results from dermal fillers should last between 4 and 13 months, depending on the type of filler used and where on the face it was placed. The effects fade gradually over time but can be maintained with regular top-up treatments, at intervals advised by your clinician. If you decide not to continue with the top-ups, the filler gel will biodegrade in the skin and simply disappear.
Until signs of inflammation disappear, we recommend you avoid exposing the treated area to extreme heat like sunbathing, saunas, or steam baths.
There will be some redness, tenderness, and swelling around the treated area immediately after the injection. You might also feel an itching sensation. All side effects should subside after a couple of hours.
