At Cheltenham & Cotswold Dental, we are committed to providing the most comfortable, effective, and advanced dental care available. That’s why we’re proud to offer EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) – a revolutionary approach to professional dental hygiene treatment.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy?

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a modern, evidence-based method of dental cleaning developed by EMS (Electro Medical Systems). Rather than simply removing visible deposits from the teeth, GBT focuses on identifying and removing harmful biofilm – the sticky layer of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, and other oral health problems.

Using innovative technology and a gentle, systematic approach, GBT delivers a more thorough and comfortable clean than traditional scale and polish treatments.

How Does GBT Work?

GBT follows a structured eight-step protocol designed to maximise patient comfort and treatment effectiveness:

  1. Assessment
Your hygienist begins by assessing your oral health and identifying areas that require attention.
  2. Disclosing Biofilm
A harmless coloured dye is applied to reveal biofilm on the teeth and gums. This allows both you and your hygienist to see exactly where bacteria are accumulating.
  3. Oral Health Education
The disclosed areas help guide personalised advice on brushing, flossing, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene at home.
  4. Airflow® Cleaning
A warm stream of air, water, and fine erythritol powder gently removes biofilm, stains, and early plaque deposits from the teeth, gums, and hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Perioflow® (When Required)
For patients with gum disease, specialised nozzles can gently clean periodontal pockets below the gumline.
  6. Piezon® Ultrasonic Scaling
Any remaining hard deposits (calculus or tartar) are removed using EMS’s advanced ultrasonic technology, which is gentle on teeth and soft tissues.
  7. Final Check
Your hygienist confirms that all biofilm and deposits have been successfully removed.
  8. Recall and Prevention Planning
A tailored maintenance plan helps keep your smile healthy between visits.

Why Isn’t Traditional Polishing Needed with GBT?

Many patients are surprised to learn that a traditional polishing paste is usually unnecessary with EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy. That’s because the Airflow® technology used during treatment removes biofilm, plaque and surface stains more effectively and gently than conventional polishing methods.

Traditional polishing pastes can be abrasive and may remove a small amount of tooth surface over time. In contrast, GBT uses a fine erythritol powder combined with warm water and air to clean and smooth the teeth while preserving natural tooth structure. The result is teeth that feel exceptionally clean, smooth and fresh without the need for a separate polishing stage.

This minimally invasive approach is one of the reasons why GBT is considered the gold standard in preventive dental hygiene care.
